How to Use This Calculator
If your Salt Water Generator (SWG) is flashing a "Low Salt" or "Inspect Cell" warning, it has stopped producing chlorine. Here is how to use this tool to get it running again:
- Test Your Water Manually: Do not rely solely on the digital readout of your SWG. Always test your water with a Taylor drop test or salt test strips first.
- Know Your Volume: Enter your exact pool capacity. If you aren't sure, use our Volume Calculator.
- Add and Brush: Buy the recommended bags of high-purity pool salt. Pour the salt into the shallow end (never the skimmer) and brush vigorously until it dissolves.
The Math & Science Behind Saltwater Pools
Saltwater pools are not chlorine-free pools. A Salt Water Generator uses a process called electrolysis to convert dissolved salt (Sodium Chloride) into Free Chlorine. In order for that electrical reaction to happen safely, the water needs to have a specific conductivity.
The Sweet Spot (3,200 ppm)
Most major SWG brands (like Hayward, Pentair, and Jandy) require a salt level between 2,700 ppm and 3,400 ppm. Our calculator defaults to a target of 3,200 ppm, which provides optimal conductivity without risking "high salt" warnings.
The Danger of "Over-Salting"
Unlike liquid chlorine or acid, salt does not evaporate or break down. The only way salt leaves your pool is through splash-out or backwashing. It is always better to under-shoot your target slightly. If you add too much, you will have to physically drain water out of the pool.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much salt does a new pool need?
If you are starting with completely fresh water (0 ppm of salt), a standard 15,000-gallon pool will require roughly 400 pounds of salt, which equals exactly ten 40-pound bags, to reach a target of 3,200 ppm.
How long should I wait to turn on my salt cell after adding salt?
You must leave your SWG turned OFF for at least 24 hours after adding salt. Leave the main pool pump running on high speed during this time to circulate the water. Turning the cell on while highly concentrated, undissolved salt passes through it can instantly short out the unit.
Can you put too much salt in a pool?
Yes. If your salt levels exceed 4,000 ppm, many generators will display a 'High Salt' error and shut down completely. High salinity also accelerates galvanic corrosion on metal pool ladders, light fixture rings, and heater heat exchangers.
What kind of salt should I use in my pool?
Use pool-grade sodium chloride that is at least 99% pure — the bag will say "pool salt." Never use iodized table salt, rock salt, or ice-melt blends: the anti-caking agents and calcium/magnesium impurities cloud the water and can stain surfaces or foul your cell.
Why does my salt system's reading disagree with my test strips?
Your generator doesn't measure salt directly — it estimates salinity from the water's electrical conductivity, which drops as water gets colder. In cool spring water, the panel commonly under-reads by several hundred ppm. Always trust an independent test (a Taylor K-1766 drop test or fresh strips) before adding salt to chase a low panel reading.
Do I need to add salt every year?
Salt never evaporates or gets "used up" — the generator converts it to chlorine and the chlorine converts right back to salt. You only replace what physically leaves the pool through splash-out, backwashing, and draining rain overflow. For most pools that's just 1–3 bags each spring.
